Outdoor Lighting

When recommending anything to our customers in the Caribbean and Bermuda, we always keep in mind where and how it will be used. The island climate is amazing all year long, but the elements of wind, rain, sun and sea can be tough on many metals and plastic. We want you to purchase products that look amazing from day 1 to day 9001.

Lighting Design Tips

  • Keep it in the Family – Lighting designers make it easy to create consistency and flow in your home. When selecting lighting, shop by family. You can find a chandelier, pendants, sconce, flush mount and more within a design family. Check out the video from Kichler on the right to see some great examples.

  • Pick a Finish and Carry it Through – For instance, in the kitchen, try to match your light fixtures to cabinet hardware, hinges, plumbing fixtures and door handles. Not everything has to match perfectly, but try to keep them in the same finish family.
  • New Construction – Plan lighting into your construction project. If you have an open wall, that is the perfect time to run wiring for lighting. Think about how you will use the space and where switches will be most convenient. Some options you may want to consider – track lighting, ceiling fans, under cabinet lighting, recessed ceiling lighting, pendants … so many choices to illuminate your space!
  • Ceiling Fans – Keep air circulating and shine some light at the same time. Ceiling fans are a great choice both inside and out.
  • Smart Switches – Go beyond the On/Off switch. If you're installing a fan with a light, consider adding a switch that controls and dims the light and controls the fan speed.
  • Corrosion and Metals – Bermuda and the Caribbean offer some of the most beautiful views in the world, but are often not so lovely on metal. For your outdoor lighting fixtures, consider a non-metallic piece for years of performance and durability.
  • Size and Scale – There are so many choices from large multi-tier chandeliers to simple, elegant 3-light chandeliers. Take a look at your space, ceiling height and overall feel of your space to determine how large or small your fixtures should be. It’s helpful to get perspective and inspiration from the Lighting Gallery and interior design magazines.
  • Recessed Lighting – This is a great, minimalistic way to add light to your space. We work with Progress Lighting because they have everything you need for recessed lighting.
  • Here Comes the Sun – When selecting lighting, think about the natural light that is available to you – windows, skylights, glass doors. Think about your lighting needs both during the day and at night.

The 5 Reasons it's Cool to Be Green!

  • Environmental Impact – Switching to compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) is a great way to reduce energy consumption. You can trade a 60 watt incandescent bulb for a 13 watt CFL and save over 75% in energy consumption. In Bermuda, lighting accounts for over 10% of energy consumption in homes and 28% in businesses according to the Bermuda Energy Green Paper, published February 2009. Reduced energy consumption means using fewer natural and imported resources.
  • Lower Electric Bill – Yes, CFLs are good for the environment. But, they are also great for your electric bill. Your electric bill is based on cost per kilowatt hours. Fewer watts means less money out of your wallet.
  • Changing Light Bulbs Less Often – Is that bulb out again? If you have incandescent bulbs, they only last for about 750 hours. CFLs last from 5000 to 10,000 hours per bulb. This means you have to purchase fewer bulbs AND change them less often - especially those bulbs way out of reach!

  • Less Physical Waste – Another benefit of having bulbs that last longer is reduced waste. Instead of throwing them out every 75 hours of use, it’s every 8,000 hours of use. Instead of throwing out 10 bulbs, you’re only throwing out 1 at the end of 8,000 hours.
  • Lighting Choices in Bulbs – CFLs have come a long way. They used to give off an odd, eerie glow that made people take them down only days after installing them. Now they come in a variety of light colors from natural daylight to soft white. However, CFLs are generally not dimmable. Check the packaging for details.
